CBM Waterproofing is built on three generations and more than half a century of waterproofing in the Western Cape. The story starts in the 1970s with George Deminey, a self-taught waterproofer who helped shape the professional side of the trade across the Cape. George was a skilled tradesman and a sharp businessman, and several of the systems contractors still use today were first developed and brought to market through his work.
Working with his son-in-law Richard Russell, George pioneered the five-coat acrylic waterproofing system and earned royalties from leading manufacturers for products that became industry standards. Klodec, Nuclad, and several other widely used products came out of their research and their work in the field. They were also among the first contractors in the Western Cape to use torch-on waterproofing.
The work has lasted. Systems they applied more than 40 years ago are still performing at the Golden Acre in Cape Town, on the roof of the Media 24 building, and at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch. Those installations still show the standard that has defined the business from the start.
Richard Russell joined George's business in his twenties, after serving as an engine room officer on a merchant navy ship. He brought the same precision to waterproofing, approaching architects across Cape Town himself to build the business up. Richard passed away in 2023, and his knowledge, his integrity, and his methodical way of solving difficult waterproofing problems are still the foundation CBM works from today.
Andrew Russell, Richard's son, joined in 2015 after finishing a law degree, which gave him a firm grip on contracts, client obligations, and structured problem-solving. Having grown up around the trade and been taught it by his father, Andrew now runs every side of the business, from client work and site management to the detailed technical reports behind complex waterproofing and painting jobs. Several of the team have worked alongside the Russell family for well over a decade, some since Andrew was a child. The business runs on honesty, integrity, and ingenuity, with people treated as partners rather than staff.
